Compare the amount you will pay for the same usable unit: price per ounce, pound, gram, liter, item, sheet, or serving. Divide the package price by its quantity, convert competing packages to one matching unit, and compare the unrounded results. Then check whether you can use and store the larger package. The lowest shelf-label number is not a saving if some of the food will go unused.
Unit pricing turns two packages that look different into one fair comparison. The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines it as the cost per unit of measure, such as cost per milliliter or ounce. That is the whole idea. The hard part is making sure both labels use the same unit and that the quantity is useful in your kitchen.
What is the unit-price formula?
Use this formula:
Unit price = package price / package quantity
Suppose a hypothetical 15-ounce can costs $1.29:
$1.29 / 15 ounces = $0.086 per ounce
That is 8.6 cents per ounce, or about $0.09 per ounce when rounded to the nearest cent.
Now suppose a 28-ounce can costs $2.10:
$2.10 / 28 ounces = $0.075 per ounce
That is 7.5 cents per ounce, or about $0.08 per ounce when rounded. The larger can is cheaper per ounce if you use all of it.
Keep the unrounded results until the decision is made. If you compare the rounded shelf figures, the difference appears to be one cent per ounce. Using the unrounded figures, the difference is 1.1 cents per ounce. Across 28 ounces, buying the smaller-can quantity at its unit rate would cost $2.408. The 28-ounce can costs $2.10, a difference of $0.308, or about $0.31.

Which unit should you use?
Use the unit that describes what you are actually buying. Common choices include:

A hypothetical 2-pound bag of rice priced at $3.20 contains 32 ounces:
2 pounds x 16 ounces = 32 ounces
$3.20 / 32 ounces = $0.10 per ounce
A hypothetical 5-pound bag priced at $7.20 contains 80 ounces:
5 pounds x 16 ounces = 80 ounces

The larger bag costs one cent less per ounce. For the same 32 ounces, that difference is $0.32. That saving only matters if the household will use the rice and has dry, pest-resistant storage space for it.
Can you trust the unit price on the shelf label?
Treat the shelf label as a useful first pass, then check it when the packages use different units, a promotion is involved, or the result looks odd. Recompute the figure from the current package price and net quantity when:
- one label uses ounces and another uses pounds;
- one price requires a loyalty account or digital coupon;
- a sale changes the price at checkout;
- a multipack label shows a count but not the total amount;
- a package size has changed;
- the shelf tag and package do not appear to match; or
- the online listing and store package show different quantities.
Take a photo or type the price and size into a calculator. The extra 20 seconds is worthwhile when the comparison will guide a repeated purchase.
How do you compare a sale, coupon, or multipack?
First calculate the price you will actually pay. Then divide by the total quantity you will receive.
Imagine two 18-ounce packages cost $3.42 after a promotion. The total quantity is:
2 x 18 ounces = 36 ounces

$3.42 / 36 ounces = $0.095 per ounce
That is 9.5 cents per ounce. Compare 9.5 cents with the unrounded unit price of the other option.
For a percentage discount, calculate the discount first. If a hypothetical $4.00 package is 25% off:
$4.00 x 0.25 = $1.00 discount
$4.00 - $1.00 = $3.00 final price
If the package contains 30 ounces:

Include any condition that changes the real transaction. A buy-one-get-one offer does not help if you only receive the lower price after buying two. A coupon that applies to one package should not be spread across three. Taxes, delivery charges, membership fees, and minimum-order rules may matter when comparing stores, but keep them separate from the product unit price so the arithmetic remains visible.
